Chair-Based Exercise – Seated Strength Training

Part 1

Chair-Based Exercise – Seated Strength Training

This three day course is designed for health and exercise professionals wishing to deliver exercise to frailer older people. The course can be accessed by candidates who have no formal qualifications but have experience working with older people such as care workers, therapy assistants or volunteers. It is also appropriate for qualified exercise teachers.

The course uses an evidence-based approach to the delivery of exercises for frailer older people in order to ensure that exercise programmes aiming to promote independence, confidence and/or to reduce the risk of and injuries among older people are specific, progressive, and effective.

The course runs over three days, plus assessment day (4 days in total). The days are a mix of theory and practical sessions which are workshop based allowing time for development of leading skills and exercise technique. The assessment has four elements – leading, evaluating, planning and underpinning knowledge.

Course dates are designed to allow time for home study (approximately 20 hours) and candidates are expected to develop their skills and prepare for the assessment in this time.

Those who have successfully completed the courses will gain a nationally recognized qualification and a certificate in Chair Based Exercise. The qualification is on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REP’s) at level 2 as CPD.

On completion of the course we offer help and support in the delivery of the exercise programme including further training and workshops which are all free to those working within Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Refresher courses are offered throughout the year and it is important that staff attend at least one of these sessions a year.

The training aims to provide

  • The skills and knowledge to deliver a prescribed exercise programme to frailer older people.

The training will cover

  • How specific exercises can benefit older people
  • Safe and effective delivery of an exercise programme
  • Adaptation and progression
