Level 2 Fitness Instructing Gym Advice and Information


About the Qualification:

This qualification is the Level 2 in Fitness Instructing Gym Based Exercise, which is universally recognised and allows you to work as a Fitness Instructor in any gym or health club in the world. The Fitness Instructor job is flexible, enabling you to work shift work ranging from early mornings to late evenings, giving you the chance to schedule it around university or college. The work is varied and interesting and mainly involves supporting gym members in achieving their fitness goals, taking classes and maintaining the facilities. It pays a good wage and is perfect for anyone who enjoys sport, keeping healthy, fitness and working with people in the leisure industry.

This qualification is the minimum requirement for working in a gym. After this you can progress on to the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training course.

What to Expect: This online course can be completed anytime during your 300 days of access to the portal. The portal is designed by the leading Awarding Body YMCA Awards; there are two main units to study online, Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 2 Mandatory Units.

The Level 2 Gym Instructor covers the following topics; Introduction to Body Weight Exercises, Introductions to Cardiovascular Machines,    Introduction to Free Weights, Introduction Resistance, Session Structure, Warm up and Cool Down, Collecting Information, Planning, Instructing, Reflecting,  Cardiovascular and Resistance Training Guidelines, Modifications, Alternatives and Progressions, Games and Additional Learning Aids.

The Level 2 Mandatory Units cover the following topics; Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise, Fitness and Health, Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health, Support Clients Who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity, Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment and Special Populations.

During the training day you are taught about the gym equipment, exercises, training methods and programme writing. You will then complete your own gym programme for a colleague or person after the training day in preparation for the assessment day. You will be assessed taking your client through this programme in the gym. This practical assessment takes approximately 45 – 60 minutes. You will also take your two theory multiple choice answer exams on the assessment day. This sounds daunting at the moment, but by this stage you will be fully prepared for it.

What do I need to bring to the training and assessment days: For both days we advise that you bring pens, notebooks/paper, highlighters, a wash bag, towel and a change of clothes that you would feel comfortable exercising in. This must include suitable trainers.
