Fitness Instructor Training Day

Preparing for your Training Day

 

As part of our Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing Gym course you will need to attend one training day and one assessment day. The training day is designed to support you practically with all the skills needed to work on the gym floor with clients preparing and delivering Gym programs.

 

Training Day

Training days tend to run 10.00am – 5.00pm at one of the David Lloyd Gyms we use in either Cambridge, Ipswich, Nottingham, Finchley, Oxford, Birmingham, Basildon or iTrain Gym in Manchester. There will be a group of 5 – 7 learners attending this day and one instructor.  We you will need to bring the Gym Learner Assessment Record, pen, paper, appropriate gym clothing, clean trainers and a packed lunch.

 

The training day will allow you to meet other learners studying on the course who also have the same ambition and passion to become to qualified Level 2 Fitness Instructor. The training day allows you to have some face to face time with an instructor. You will spend a small amount of time in the classroom going through the paperwork from the Gym Learner Assessment Record and understanding the practical assessment process. You will spend the majority of the day on the gym floor. During  your training day you will be surrounded by regular gym users going about their daily workouts, we purposely selected David Lloyd and iTrain Gyms to give you the learners the opportunity to see first-hand what it is like in a busy and popular gym environment with fitness instructors at work.

Level 2 Fitness Instructing

To become a Level 2 Fitness Instructor you not only need to understand and have good knowledge of the Anatomy and Physiology, Principles of Fitness, Health and Safety, Supporting clients units but also how to use, instruct and demonstrate a safe and effective workout for a range of different clients. This will include learning about preparatory and static stretches, mobility exercises, all of the different CV machines, resistance machines, free weight exercises, body weight exercises and developmental stretches.

During the training day the instructor will show you how to instruct and demonstrate all of the different stretches and exercises that you need to know as a Level 2 Fitness Instructor, you will learn each exercise and then in pairs take it in turn practising your instructing skills with one of you in the role as the Fitness Instructor and the other playing the role of a new client. Once you have spent some time practising the instructor will carry out continuous assessments, whereby they will be marking you on your instructing skills. In total each person on the training day will be assessed on one CV machine, two resistance machines, two free weight exercises – this will most likely be one with a bar bell and the other dumb bells  and finally three body weight exercises. You will be given the written feedback at the end of the day to take away and refer to when preparing for your final observation.

Time Table

The training day is delivered similar to a military operation, being on a tight schedule with lots of information to take in and new things to learn. On average assessment days tend to run the month after the training day, this will allow enough time for you to go and spend some time in a gym practising everything you have learnt from the training day in preparation for your final practical observation.
